There was record engagement with people worldwide during Mayo Day 2021 at the start of this month.
The virtual event is estimated to have reached in excess of 36 million people.
44 different countries took part in the celebration of “everything Mayo”.
These figures were outlined today by Martina Hughes of Mayo County Council’s Communications Office at an SPC Cultural and Heritage meeting of Mayo County Council.
100,000 people interacted with the programme of events for Mayo Day 2021 and the overwhelming response was very positive, Martina told today’s meeting.
In addition there was a huge local, national and international response to the TG4 programme aired on the evening of Mayo Day entitled Mayo day Ár bPobal - Our People.
The audience figures for this TV programme has not yet been fully established but will be available shortly.
In response Ballinrobe based Fine Gael councillor Michael Burke congratulated the local authority on the day, but nonetheless, he argued that in his opinion, south Mayo was not well represented on the TG4 programme. He also felt that there should have been greater emphasis on Ireland West Airport Knock and Knock Shrine.
