Almost 7,000 bikes have been reported stolen since January 2020.
Gardaí have released figures this morning, which show that more than 1,000 bicycles have been taken since the start of this year, while over 5,600 were stolen in 2020.
Last year saw over 200 bikes being stolen in Galway, 15 in the Mayo Garda division, 21 in Roscommon / Longford and 26 in Sligo / Leitrim.
Gardai are launching a new campaign called Lock it or lose it" -with advice to cyclists to help keep their property safe, including spending up to 20 percent the value of the bike on two locks, and locking it indoors or in a well-lit area.
People are also advised to take a photo of their bike, note the serial number and email it back to themselves so they have a record of it.
