The Chief Medical Officer says high vaccination levels and low case numbers are vital as the country tries to exit the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr Tony Holohan says if we can keep cases low and continue to vaccinate as many people as possible, we will find ourselves in  a different risk environment, where we can see further easing of measures, but our task now is to keep the disease under control by following the basic measures, and taking up the vaccine when it's offered to us.

379 new cases of the virus and nine additional deaths were reported yesterday evening.

17 of the new cases were in Galway, with 12 in Roscommon.

Elsewhere in Connacht, there were less than 5 new cases in Mayo, and none reported in Sligo or Leitrim.

The five-day moving average of new cases has dropped by 10 per cent over the past week, to 422.
