Urgent legislation is needed to ensure that CCTV footage can be used in identifying those responsible for illegal dumping.
That's according to Ballinrobe Fianna Fail Councillor Damien Ryan, who says the legislation is needed to close a loophole, whereby - under data protection laws - CCTV cannot currently be used to detect those responsible.
He also believes laws should be introduced compelling householders to declare how they're disposing of household rubbish.
Councillor Ryan raised the issue at this week's meeting of the Claremorris / Swinford Municipal District.
He told Midwest News that he got widespread support from councillors to call on Government to proceed with legislation as quickly as possible to tackle the illegal dumpers.
