The order was signed today by Mayo County Council to close the main road ( L-1811) through the village of Islandeady, Castlebar for three weeks this summer to allow work to continue on the construction of the new N5 dual carriageway between Castlebar and Westport.
The road into the busy village will be closed to traffic from the 21st June to the 12th of July, a period of three weeks. An alternative route will be in place to assist local traffic.
These dates were confirmed this evening by the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District Blackie Gavin.
Islandeady Community Council has opposed the closure of the road into the heart of their community in the middle of the Summer season. They made a presentation to last month’s meeting of Castlebar Municipal District outlining why they had concerns about the road being closed for three months, which was what was on the table at the time, and sought what they considered a more reasonable alternative route to be put in place when the road was closed.
Elected councillors supported their stance.
However, this evening the order has been signed and the road is now due to close for the reduced period of three weeks, beginning on June 21st.
