Galway County Council has been given the go-ahead to seek tenders for a long-awaited project to improve the pier at Inis Oirr - the smallest of the Aran Islands off Co Galway.
The Minister for Rural & Community Development Heather Humphreys has approved the business case for the pier project which will address issues that have arisen over the years, in particular the danger from waves breaking over the pier.
It will also address other issues arising from the numbers of tourists and ferry vessels using the Inis Oirr pier.
In June 2016, two people fell into the sea while disembarking from a ferry, as the gangway had slipped off the quayside.
The long-awaited plan will include additional berthage, dredging and an extension of the breakwater and pier.
Minister Humphreys says the project is vital for the future of the island, and the safety of islanders and visitors.
