There’s no joy on the clean-up front of the extensive household waste, dumped indiscriminately at the back of a busy Castlebar Business Park.
The unsightly illegal dumping in the N5 Business Park in Moneen, Castlebar has been highlighted for weeks now and earlier this month the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District Blackie Gavin told Midwest News that he had called on Mayo County Council to clean it up and to install mobile cameras in an attempt to identify the culprit(s). He acknowledged that the Business Park is in private ownership and not the direct responsibility of the local authority, but he said in view of the busy location the clean-up was necessary.
Despite his call, the rubbish remains in place and Midwest News contacted Mayo County Council today to ask if it intends clearing up the mess.
A spokesperson for Mayo County Council said that the N5 Business park, Castlebar is in private ownership. “There are difficulties establishing ownership of the area where waste has been deposited. The Council will be arranging removal of the waste when Covid 19 Restrictions facilitate the carrying out of this work”.
