A transatlantic fibre optic cable is on course to make land at Old Head in Mayo this Autumn. The America Europe Connect 2 subsea fibre optic cable is currently at the foreshore licensing application stage.
At yesterday’s monthly meeting of Westport-Belmullet Municipal District councillors were told that public consultation on the proposal is still open for submissions.
Andy Hudson of Aqua Comms attended the online meeting and explained that once operational, the line will provide high speed and significantly increased capacity between the US, Ireland and Europe.
The cable, when landed at Old Head, will connect into an existing Aurora network, which connects to Dublin and on into Europe.
There will be no trench digging required to get the system operational.
The proposed route into Clew Bay is south of Achill Island and north of Clare Island, terminating at Old Head beach.
A community fund is also part of the project.
Local Fine Gael councillor Peer Flynn says it may be difficult to immediately see the benefit of this development to Mayo at present, but long term it could be responsible for enticing a major data centre.
