A candle has been lighting throughout the day today and will light again throughout the day tomorrow in the homes of the survivors of Mother and Baby Homes who this afternoon got their first glimpse of the 3000 page Report of the Commission of Investigation into the institutions.
Over the past five years, the commission has been establishing what occurred in 14 mother-and-baby homes and four county homes, including the Tuam Mother and Baby Home.
The institutions, which are spread across the country, operated between the 1920s and the 1990s.
Breeda Murphy of Tuam Mother and Baby Home Alliance was among the 500 participants in a webinar today where the Minister for Children Roderic O'Gorman spoke about the Commission’s Report and the actions now promised by government in response. The Taoiseach Micheal Martin and the Minister for Disability, Galway East deputy, Ann Rabbitte also took part in the webinar.
Breeda spoke to Midwest News today about the experience and the long wait for so many to hear what the Minister had to say today.
