A public health expert says Ireland has almost the highest rate of coronavirus in the world.
6,888 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed in the Republic along with 8 more deaths.
There are 2,088 infections in Dublin, 862 in Cork, 469 in Limerick, 405 in Wexford and 320 in Waterford - the rest are spread across all other counties.
In this region there are 140 new cases in Galway, 95 in Mayo, 43 in Sligo, 20 in Leitrim and 16 in Roscommon.
The country's 14 day incidence rate has risen to 1,291.2 per 100 thousand population.
DCU Professor Anthony Staines says the spiralling cases are much worse than predicted.
Last night 1,499 people with Covid-19 were being treated in Irish hospitals.
The busiest facility nationally was Cork University Hospital where there were 135 patients with the disease.
Figures from the HSE also show there were 126 people in ICU receiving treatment after contracting the virus.
