Criminals have continued to plague rural Ireland despite the pandemic, with trailer and cattle thefts reaching record levels, according to the Irish Farmers Journal.
The paper reveals that over 1,000 cattle nationally were reported stolen or missing last year (2020).
Trailer theft has become so widespread that machinery dealers are alerting gardaí to trailers being traded that were stolen 10 years ago and have changed hands multiple times.
Farmers are advised to secure gates and padlocks, consider installing CCTV and warning signs, engrave eircode on to farm tools and machinery and report any thefts to the gardai.
Hannah Quinn Mulligan is a news journalist with the Farmers Journal and she told Midwest News that the pandemic has not curbed rural crime.
