A representative of the Irish Nursery Industry is has warning that thousands of jobs are at risk due to a shortage of peat production.
Larry Doran of Doran’s Nurseries in Kildare says the Irish horticultural community has been thrown into crisis over fears Bord na Mona will not be able to supply peat for the 2021 growing season.
The nursery industry received confirmation on the 11th of December that the semi-state body will not have peat available for the sector from March.
Mr Doran wants Bord na Mona to provide the industry with peat which had been ring fenced for the sector, as well as Government approval for composters to harvest peat.
Larry Doran told Midwest News that he is concerned about the environmental impacts importing peat would have.
