The Tánaiste has conceded funding will have to be provided to Sligo Airport in order to keep The Coast Guard Service in the region up and running.
Responding to a question from Independent Sligo-Leitrim TD Marian Harkin in the Dail yesterday, Leo Varadkar said that he couldn't imagine the service being moved anywhere else.
Waterford Airport was compared with the Sligo facility, having no passenger flights since 2016, yet they received €3/4 million to support similar services to those provided in Sligo.
The Tánaiste acknowledged The Coast Guard base couldn't be moved to Ireland West Airport Knock and conceded that Sligo Airport would be provided with funding, if needed, to keep the service operational.
