A Westport Councillor is calling for a root and branch review of the rating system, which is says is past its sell by date and should no longer penalise local businesses and retailers who are providing important employment across Co Mayo.

Mayo County Council has received a commercial rates rebate of over €8.6 million from central Government, following the rates waiver for businesses impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Independent Councillor Christy Hyland says the outdated rating system needs to be replaced going forward.

While there will be no increase in commercial rates in Mayo next year, he's concerned that every two or three years, rates are first in line for an increase when funding is needed to provide essential services.
