€150,000 will be spent on upgrading the water treatment plant on Achill Island in early 2021, in addition to €100,000 already spent at the facility since summer.
That was confirmed by Mayo Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon, who has made representations to the Local Government Minister, Darragh O’Brien to progress this issue.
The initial works related to building resilience at the plant with the provision of emergency flow piping, the provision of turbidity meters, the replacement of flow metres and other associated works.
The next phase of improvements will involve the installation of clarification aids to enhance water flow and improve the quality of water supply.
Some of the raw materials for these works have to be sourced from mainland Europe which is why they are not happening until 2021.
Deputy Alan Dillon told Midwest News that details of more comprehensive works on the island will become apparent once these upgrades are completed.
