The State must take responsibility to prohibit turf-cutting on bogs classified as Special Areas of Conservation.
That’s the view of Padraig Fogarty, the Campaigns Officer at the Irish Wildlife Trust.
A new report from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht shows mechanical turf-cutting has continued at almost half of the 57 SAC bogs since 2016 and in 16 of them in this year alone.
At the last official count there were less than 1% of raised bogs nationwide still growing peat and the IWT says that figure is likely to be even less following the findings in the Departments report.
Padraig Fogarty of the IWT told Midwest News that the state must enforce the EU agreements they signed up to in relation the SAC areas.
