€7,995 in funding has been approved for the Ballintubber Waterways Project in Roscommon from the Community Healthcare West through the National Lottery Grant.

Independent Cllr Anthony Waldron welcomed the allocation saying it will assist with the provision of equipment and facilities to develop tourism along the River Suck.

Planning permission has already been approved for the project, which will see canoes and kayaks used to traverse the river from Ballymoe to Castlrea.

Cllr Waldron told Midwest News that he believes this funding will kick start the development of tourism along some 133km of the river.
