Gardaí will be able to force suspects to hand over their phone passwords under a new government plan to tackle white collar crime.

It will also see the State's corporate watchdog given the power to carry out undercover investigations.

Last week, Justice Minister Helen McEntee received approval from Cabinet to push forward the new legislation against corruption.

According to the Sunday Independent, the government hopes the amendments to current laws will help Garda investigations into theft and fraud cases.
