Staff at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar are being transferred to Ballina District Hospital, to cover staff at the Ballina hospital who have been transferred to a Nursing Home in the north Mayo area dealing with an outbreak of Covid 19. In addition, agency staff are also being employed at Ballina District Hospital to cover the loss of staff transferred to the nursing home
This transfer of staff across health facilities makes no sense, according to the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District Blackie Gavin.
The Fianna Fail councilor, a member of the HSE West says it goes against present “best practice” which attempts to confine staff to one health facility to prevent crossover infection.
The Cathaoirleach told Midwest News that he is demanding an explanation from the CEO of Saolta Tony Canavan as to why this is happening in hospital facilities across the county. He has been outlining how he discovered what was being imposed on staff at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar.
