Independent Councillor Christy Hyland has called on Mayo County Council to explain why a long awaited flood defence has not been put in place at a housing estate in Westport.

Residents in the Cois Abhainn estate constantly checked that their water pumps were draining water out of the area over the weekend.

Cllr. Hyland raised the issue at yesterday’s meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District, questioning why the project hadn’t progressed considering it received Government funding four years ago.

The Independent Cllr says the residents in the estate worry about damage to their properties every time there is heavy rainfall.

Cllr. Hyland told Midwest News that a representative from Mayo County Council has been invited to attend their next municipal meeting to explain the situation.
