A Mayo postmaster has welcomed the decision to revert social welfare payments back to weekly allocations from fortnightly.

John Pat Scott of Scott’s XL and Post Office in Aghagower has welcomed what he says is an ‘unexpected decision’ from Government.

The Department of Social Protection revealed that the last double week will be paid on the week of the 19th of October, with the weekly payment beginning on the 2nd of November.

The Chairman of the Ballina /South Mayo branch of the Irish Postmaster’ Union claims the fortnightly payments had a ‘devastating effect’ on local economies and small businesses.

John Pat Scott, the owner of Scott’s XL and Post Office told Midwest News that he is delighted with the decision.
