The National Public Health Emergency Team says the number of Covid-19 patients in hospital is growing 'exponentially' - and is now a quarter of the way to April's peak.
The chairman of its modelling group says an average of 13 patients are being admitted every day.
Professor Philip Nolan says ICU admissions are also rising rapidly.
There are currently 159 people with the virus in hospitals across the country, with 25 patients in intensive care.
The total number of coronavirus cases passed the 40,000 mark last night, after 506 new infections were confirmed.
Latest county by county figures show Galway has now passed the 900 mark, with 115 cases confirmed over the past week.
Mayo is now at 681 - up over 30 cases in the past week.
Over 50 new cases were confirmed in Co Roscommon in the past week, bringing its total to 513, with 229 cases in Sligo and 124 in Leitrim.
