Mairead McGuinness says she will "hit the ground running" early next week, after the European Parliament yesterday voted to approve the Midlands-Northwest MEP as the new EU Commissioner for Financial Stability.

Ms McGuinness will replace former Commission Phil Hogan, following his resignation after the Golfgate controversy, and she's expected to be formally appointed to the role in the coming days.

Mairead McGuinness has been a Fine Gael MEP for Midlands-North-West since 2004 , and has also served as First Vice President of the Parliament.

Louth County Councillor Colm Markey will replace Mairead McGuinness as MEP for the Midlands-Northwest constituency.
