Fans of luxury cars will not have a chance to see some of the world's top models in Co Mayo this year, as the annual Cannonball super car event has been cancelled this year, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Since the Cannonball event started 12 years ago, spectators in Westport, Castlebar, Ballina and Claremorris have got up close and personal with almost 200 of the finest cars on the planet.

Over the years, the event has raised over €1.1 million for various charities.

This year, Barnardos were chosen as the official charity for Cannonball 2020, but with the event now cancelled, organisers are appealing to people for financial assistance to help the charity's work with vulnerable children.

Alan Bannon, founder of Cannonball, says it's a big disappointment to cancel Cannonball this year, but it would be a small victory against the coronavirus if Barnardos could still hit its fundraising targets.

A GoFundMe page has been set up, under the title Barnardos Urgent Appeal.
