Emergency services were called to rescue a lone yachtsman off the Mayo coast shortly before 5 o’clock this morning.
The Sligo Coastguard Helicopter and Achill Island Lifeboat were tasked with the rescue operation.
A 36-foot yacht got into difficulty on rocks near Roy in the inner reaches of Clew Bay and a ‘Mayday’ alert was called.
The yacht was marooned on the rocks and the man aboard successfully reached a nearby island on a life raft.
He was successfully winched into the coastguard helicopter in challenging conditions and taken to Sligo University Hospital where an ambulance was awaiting.
Midwest News understands that the man is not thought to have any serious injuries.
The Achill Island Lifeboat returned to its moorings shortly after 7 o’clock this morning.
