Midlands-Northwest MEP Mairead McGuinness is now tipped as the frontrunner to become Ireland's next EU Commissioner.

The Irish Times reports this morning that the Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney may not allow his name to go forward, if it's believed he won't retain the trade portfolio.

It could clear the way for Midlands-Northwest MEP and European Parliament vice-president Mairead McGuinness to be nominated, while fellow MEP and former minister, Frances Fitzgerald, has also declared her interest in succeeding Phil Hogan.

Tanaiste Leo Varadker told party TDs last night that he expected nominations for the role of EU Commissioner to be finalised by the end of this week.
