A search is ongoing off the Galway coast for two girls who went missing after entering Furbo beach in south Connemara on paddle boards yesterday evening.

The alarm was raised at about 10pm when the girls failed to return, and a search got underway.

The Coast Guard Rescue 118 helicopter from Sligo and Rescue 115 from Shannon searched areas of Galway Bay overnight.

The search is ongoing this morning, and also involves lifeboat crews from Galway, the Aran Islands and Costello Bay, as well as Gardai and local volunteers.

An appeal has been issued for boat owners to assist in the search of the coastline.
