Galway City Council has opened a book of condolence following the death of former Nobel prize winner John Hume.

Mr Hume passed away early yesterday, after suffering from dementia for some time.

He was awarded the Freedom of Galway City in 1999 in recognition of his work in promoting peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.

Widespread tributes have been paid to the former SDLP leader since news of his death emerged yesterday.

His Funeral Mass will take place in Derry tomorrow in accordance with public health guidelines.

Members of the public are being asked to pay their respects by lighting a candle of peace at 9pm tonight in his memory.

A book of condolence will remain open at City Hall in Galway until Friday afternoon.
