A Sligo-Leitrim Deputy says the attempt to move jury trials from Sligo Courthouse to Letterkenny because of the pandemic is unnecessary and unwarranted.
Independent TD Marian Harkin says such a move would cause huge disruption, involve huge dislocation, and come at a huge cost.
Deputy Harkin made the remarks in the Dail yesterday in response to the Minister for Justice, Helen McEntee.
The Sligo TD argued that it would be a logistical nightmare to move jury trials to Letterkenny, which is a 226km round trip.
She said that “You are talking about witnesses, Gardai and all the court staff making those journeys and, in some cases, because of pleas entered, or for other reasons, a trial may not proceed.”
