The public should be asked what they think would be the best way for Mayo County Council to develop the Military Barracks in the county town and the former Daly’s Hotel in the Mall.
That’s the view of Castlebar Fine Gael councillor Donna Sheridan.
Both properties are in the ownership of the local authority for some time now, and there are plans in place for the extensive renovation of both locations, nonetheless, the views of the people of Castlebar and the wider county on the best way forward with both properties – is now the way to go, according to Cllr Sheridan.
Mayo county council has sought funding from central government to develop both properties, but to date no significant funding has been secured.
The matter was raised at this week’s monthly meeting of Castlebar Municipal District, where a long sought property report by cllr Sheridan to council management, was finally provided.
Cllr Sheridan asked last October, ahead of the annual budget meeting of the authority, to get a report on all of the property and lands in the county, in Mayo County Council’s ownership.
She argued that such a report was essential for councillors deciding on an annual budget to know what properties were in Mayo County Council’s ownership and the plans for this property - so that cllrs could evaluate if the authority was making the best use out of rate payers money.
There was some resistance from Council management to provide the same, saying it would be very cumbersome and time consuming to compile.
Cllr Sheridan told Midwest News today that despite the initial reluctance - she’s glad the report has now been produced.
