Galway Independent TD Catherine Connolly is to put her name forward for the upcoming election of Leas-Cheann Comhairle. The position which will come up for decision in the Dáil at Thursday’s sitting.
She has been endorsed by the Independent group in the house.
Since her election in 2016, when requested by the Ceann Comhairle, deputy Connolly has fulfilled the role as Chair of the Dail. She is acknowledged across all sides of the house as a capable and fair arbiter.
The deputy is a former barrister and clinical psychologist, and is the first woman to be nominated for the position of Leas-Cheann Comhairle under the new rules that were adopted in 2016 to fill both the positions of Ceann Comhairle and Leas-Cheann Comhairle by secret ballot.
