The Covid-19 death toll in the Republic has been overestimated by around 500, according to research by HIQA.

The health watchdog looked at the number of postings on RIP.ie between March and June, comparing it with previous years.

It found there were 1,200 more this year - which conflicts with the Department of Health death toll of more than 1,700 linked with Covid-19.

Dr Conor Teljeur from HIQA says the number of deaths is lower in the past few weeks, which suggests people died earlier than they would have naturally.
