Rates for Mayo businesses negatively impacted by the Covid 19 pandemic should be foregone for the rest of this year.

That was the call of the Cathaoirleach of Ballina Municipal District Michael Loftus at yesterday’s Mayo Council’s Special Policy Committee on Tourism and Food.

He believes it is the only way forward due to the demands now on restaurants, hotels and coffee shops trying to re-open next week, after months of forced closure.

He says it would result in a 13 million euro shortfall into the local authority’s coffers this year, but he believes the monies will have to be recouped from centeal government.
