A man continues to be questioned at Castlerea Garda Station in connection with the murder of Garda Detective Colm Horkan.
Hundreds of mourners attended a vigil in Castlerea last night paying their respects to the Charlestown native.
Books of condolence are being opened at Garda stations all over the country.
The 49 year old was on patrol in Castlerea, Co. Roscommon when he stopped a man who was creating a disturbance shortly before midnight on Wednesday.
The incident occurred near the AIB Bank on Main Street.
A physical altercation broke out, during which the man took Garda Horkan's gun.
He was shot a number of times and died at the scene.
He is the 89th Garda to die in the line of duty.
The post mortem has now been completed on his body and it will be released to his family for burial in the next few days.
His state funeral will be subject to Covid-19 restrictions but gardaí and the family are examining a number of options by which members of the public and his Garda colleagues can pay their respects safely.
