Sligo fire brigade battled a massive blaze yesterday after a fire broke out at a recycling depot.

The blaze began in one of three Greenstar recycling centre buildings at Deepwater Quay in Sligo at around 3.30pm.

The centre is located approximately two kilometres from the town centre.

Three units of the Sligo Fire Service battled the blaze – with assistance from Carrick on Shannon Fire Service.

Homes and businesses in Sligo town and the greater area were advised to close all windows on their premises and traffic was diverted due to the smoke.

At it’s height the blaze could be seen across neighbouring counties.

It was brought under control around 7pm yesterday and extensive damage was caused to the depot.

There were no reports of injuries.
