The Mayor of Galway City has welcomed the news that tomorrow’s vigil in Eyre Square in memory of George Floyd has been cancelled.

Councillor Mike Cubbard says racial discrimination and prejudice are not welcome in any form, and he has taken part himself in anti-racism demonstrations in the city in the past.

However, the Independent Councillor felt that a large gathering in the city would have hampered the progress made in fighting Covid-19 and called for the rally to be postponed until it was deemed safe to hold.

Cllr Cubbard believes the postponement of the event will ensure that Galway continues to be at the lower scale of COVID-19 cases and in turn, protect frontline workers and the most vulnerable in the county.

He fully supports the online rally this weekend and has again called on people to light a candle in their homes at 9.25pm tomorrow night -which is the time George Floyd was pronounced dead in hospital.
