The man who died in last night's road collision between Newport and Mulranny has been named locally as Brendan Heffernan originally from Carrowgarve in Crossmolina but living in Westport.

The collision between a motorbike and a tractor occurred at about 8.30 pm at Ardagh, Newport.

Brendan who was in his thirties was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was removed to Mayo University Hospital.

The tractor driver was uninjured.

The N59 road between Newport and Mulranny was closed for some time but the road reopened earlier to today.

Gardai are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or may have dashcam footage to contact Newport Gardai at 098 - 41102 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111.

Due to Government Restrictions and H.S.E. guidelines, Brendan's funeral will be confined to family only.
