The Mayor of Galway Mike Cubbard initiated the flying of National and County flags from homes to highlight the contribution of frontline staff during the present pandemic.

Mayor Cubbard told Midwest News this morning that there are medical staff, essential services, carers and so many more within our communities, many putting their own health at risk by working around the clock in the fight against this terrible virus.  Many of them get up and go to work from a house in your street, in your estate, village, town or city. The majority this morning will work from home and isolate best they can.

After speaking with his colleague Cllr Niall McNelis  yesterday evening both men decided to show solidarity with every frontline worker by flying a flag from their own homes to show they stand shoulder to shoulder with workers throughout this difficult time.

Dozens have now joined the initiative and are flying tricolours or Galway flags for modern day hero's.

Mayor Cubbard says it might just make that journey to work that bit easier if the route has flags of solidarity flying along the way.

He is now encouraging everyone that can do the same in every county across the region
