A county Galway based distillery has responded to the urgent need in the market for hand sanitiser, and has suspended its usual production of poitin to get the alternative product on to the shelves.
From next week Micil Distillery in Salthill will switch temporarily to the production of antibacterial hand santisier to combat the spread of Covid 19.
The distillery established for more than 170 years, will sell its new product at close to cost price, according to its owner Padraig O’Griallais.
Padraig told Midwest News today that the hand santister will be sold in plastic bottles, as distinct from glass bottles used for poitin.
He explained that the usual high excise duties on alcohol have been waived by Revenue and the Dept of Agriculture to allow him to make the change and he said he intends to have the new product to suppliers by the week after next.
