The parish of Breaffy, Castlebar are mourning the sad death of their Parish Priest Fr John McCormack. Fr John, an SMA priest, passed away on Tuesday evening after a short illness.
A native of Roundfort, he had served on the missions for 30 years and then returned to the Archdiocese of Tuam and served in Irishtown, Moylough and for the last twelve years in Breaffy, where he celebrated his golden jubilee in the priesthood with the parish last December.
His Funeral Mass will take place this Saturday at 12 noon in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Roundfort, with burial afterwards in Roundfort Cemetery.
Due to the HSE, Government and Church guidelines the funeral at all stages will be strictly private for family only.
However, the parish of Breaffy is keen to mark his passing.
As a result, tonight between 8 and 9pm the community will light a candle for Fr John in their homes and then have a reflection or prayer, and again tomorrow night from 8pm to midnight every household will put on a light in their home in his memory, and their outdoor front lights.
Local school principal George Moran told Midwest News today that Fr McCormack’s contribution to the parish was huge, and he was particularly supportive of people and families grieving after the death of a loved one.
Hus funeral Mass will be live streamed on Saturday.
