A vital treatment for new born babies that have experienced trauma to the brain during birth, is only available in hospitals in Dublin and Cork.
The need for the treatment, known as “Brain Cooling”, to be available in every maternity hospital, has been highlighted by the Cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District Michael Kilcoyne. The intervention is most effective in the first six hours after birth,
At yesterday’s HSE West Forum meeting, Cllr Kilcoyne submitted a motion calling on the Minister for Health and the HSE to immediately extend the ‘Brain Cooling’ (medical term – Therapeutic Hypothermia) treatment for babies to be available on site in every maternity hospital in the Republic of Ireland.
While the motion was approved by councillors, it was not endorsed by Saolta management.
Cllr Kilcoyne told Midwest News today, that nonetheless, the motion will now go before the Minister for Health and the Dept of Health to ensure that every child, regardless of their postal address has the same access to vital medical care.
