A man was arrested in Ballina on New Year's Eve on suspicion of drug driving.
Ballina Community Engagement Gardai were conducting their last checkpoint of 2019 as part of the "Choose Your Driver Wisely" campaign when they stopped a car and the driver of the vehicle failed the roadside test after testing positive for cocaine and
was subsequently arrested for drug driving.The Road Safety Authority says addressing the increase in drug-driving is the next big challenge it faces.
9,600 people were arrested last year on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
148 people were killed on Irish roads last year, up from 142 in 2018.
