As a group of 30 special needs children arrive from the Chernobyl region of Belarus to Ireland this evening for a Christmas holiday, one Castlebar family is preparing to welcome back a familiar face.

Igor Shadshov has been enjoying respite holidays with Marie and Dermot Cox and their family in Castlebar for a number of years, while Marie also makes regular trips to Belarus as a medical team co-ordinator with Chernobyl Children International.

Igor is one of a group of 30 children travelling from an orphanage in Belarus to Dublin Airport this evening, to enjoy Christmas with host families from across the country.

Each child will also be presented with a shoebox full of gifts, thanks to the efforts of Michelle Groarke from Swinford.

Adi Roche of Chernobyl Childrens International told Midwest News that excitement is mounting, ahead of the children's arrival in Ireland.....
