€26,600 in grant aid to provide sensory facilities and equipment in public libraries in Mayo has been announced today by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring.
The equipment can assist individuals with sensory impairments, special educational needs and other learning difficulties, and those on the Autism spectrum. €20,000 of the funding will be provided by Minister Ring’s Department while a further €6,600 will come from Mayo County Council.
The funding is part of €800,000 national investment in public libraries to support people living with autism or learning differences.
Minister Ring says the funding aims to improve the library experience and services for parents, guardians and carers of children and adults with sensory impairments, additional needs and learning differences.
This is in addition to funding of over €190,000 nationally that has been approved for the provision of 21 Magic Tables in public libraries which are used by carers and people with dementia, autism spectrum disorder and learning differences.
It is expected that the new services will be available in mid-2020.
