Two Government departments need to come together and sort out technical and legal issues, before a plebiscite can be held on the spelling of Enniscrone in Co Sligo.

That's according to Roscommon-based FG Senator Frank Feighan, who raised the matter in the Seanad this week.

Sligo County Council has expressed an interest in holding a plebiscite to allow locals decide how Enniscrone should be officially spelt, as many locals use the English spelling of the town, while the official spelling is Inishcrone.

Senator Feighan says there are two Government departments and two different legislative acts involved, and the outstanding legal and technical issues must be resolved without delay between the two departments, in order to hold the plebiscite
