The National Museum of Country Life at Turlough, Castlebar has won a prestigious  Sandford Award for excellence in heritage education.

The awards assess the education programmes at museums, galleries, historic houses and gardens across the UK and Ireland, recognising the highest standards in heritage education.

A judging team visited the National Museum of Country Life in May, and in their citation, the judges described the museum's education and learning team as "skilled and dedicated".

They said "schools and general visitors will leave inspired by the sensitive and responsive way in which their national heritage is being conserved and presented".

The Mayo museum joins 41 other leading museums and sites across Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales in the list of 2019 award winners.

The National Museum of Country Life won its first Sandford Award in 2004, and has retained the accolade every year since.
