Germany stands one hundred percent behind Ireland and the backstop and the Good Friday Agreement, as the UK brexit debate continues, that was the strong message from the German Ambassador to Ireland Dieke Potzel when she visited Castlebar yesterday.
The tourist office at the Linenhall in Castlebar was the venue yesterday afternoon for an informal meeting between community representatives in the town and t Ambassador Potzel.
The Ambassador had earlier visited Davitt College in Castlebar, where almost half of the 700 students in the second level school are studying German.
The German-Castlebar connection is rooted in a town twinning in operation for two decades now between the county town and Hochstadt in Germany.
The Ambassador also met representatives of Mayo County Council in Aras an Chontae.
Tourism Officer in Castlebar Mick Baynes told Midwest News today about the visit and the wonderful opportunity to showcase Castlebar to the Ambassador.
Ambassador Potzel said that Germany is standing one hundred percent behind Ireland in all EU dealings with the UK over Brexit and speaking to Midwest News highlighted the importance of the Good Friday agreement and the backstop and the need to avoid a hard border.
