A 54-year-old county Sligo man died suddenly after taking part in the Westport Sea 2 Summit challenge on Saturday.

JP Duffy, Bunnacranagh, Curry, Co. Sligo, a successful entrepreneur, became ill on the latter stages of the endurance challenge.

His funeral takes place today and tomorrow.

Westport Sea 2 Summit challenge– now in its 10th year - involves cycling, running and ascending and descending Croagh Patrick.

 Mr. Duffy was attended to by medics in Westport on Saturday but passed away despite efforts to save him.

Along with his wife, Yvonne, Mr. Duffy founded Westel Utilities Limited, which is based in Curry,19 years ago.

The firm, which has a significant workforce, specialises in the installation of telecoms networks.

Mr Duffy was recognized as an accomplished businessman and a champion of industrial development in the west of Ireland.

His remains will be reposing at the family home today(Monday) from 2 o’clock until 10 o’clock.

He will be laid to rest tomorrow (Tuesday) after 12 o’clock Mass in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Curry.
