Irish Water is set to start works on replacing old water mains in the Knockanillaun area of Ballina.

Almost 4km of old and damaged water pipes in Wherrew, Knockanillaun will be replaced with modern pipes, to reduce high levels of leakage and ensure a more secure supply of drinking water and better quality water for local residents and businesses who have been affected by frequent bursts and outages.

The works, being carried out in partnership with Mayo County Council, are part of Irish Water's National Leakage Reduction Programme.

Work is due to start shortly on the project, being carried out by Farran's Construction Ltd, and is expected to be completed by late February.

Traffic management will be in place during the course of the works.
