There's been widespread welcome for the Cabinet's approval for the construction of the new N5 road from Westport to Turlough, at a cost of €241 million.
After over two decades of a campaign, the Cabinet signed off on the project yesterday, and it involves the construction of a 20 km dual carriageway from Westport to Turlough, Castlebar.
Mayo County Council has welcomed the announcement, and says a schedule of works will now be put in place with a starting date in the coming weeks.
Chief Executive of Mayo Co Co Peter Hynes said this is the biggest single infrastructural investment ever undertaken in Mayo, and will completely transform the county's landscape.
When complete, he said the road will link Castlebar and Westport into a single cluster, which will encourage investment into the county and bring economic benefits for all of Mayo.
